Leadership Series Courses:

Razor's Edge Leadership Series - New or Emerging Leaders

Last year we completely revamped our Razor’s Edge Leadership Series and our participants told us it was a success! This year we plan to keep the full day format and also bring back the leadership mentors that help us add real world context to all of our topics.

Our mornings will be spent focusing on supervisory skills, particularly those that are important from a human resources perspective. While many of these topics may seem as if they are geared more toward a human resources professional, we will examine them through the lens of a supervisor. Our afternoons will be spent on a wide ranging variety of leadership topics and we will conclude each day with time spent with our mentors. A networking lunch is also included with the program each day.

(Some descriptions have been edited for space, more detail can be found on our website at www.indianhills.edu/cews/razorsedge. You can also find bios for our speakers and mentors on this site.)

Dates/Topics:

Apr. 15th – Superstar Supervisor Metrics (Morning)

Depending on your background, as a part of the leadership team, it is essential that you understand how your business generates profit and have the ability to read basic financial statements. The ability to listen is an overlooked skill that consistently ranks among the most valuable traits that a leader may possess. This session will discuss the power of listening first and speaking second, as well as provide strategies for strengthening your personal listening abilities.

May 20th – Time Management (Morning)

There are never enough hours in the day, but you can learn to be more effective with the ones you are given. This session will provide you with several action steps that will allow you to take control of your day and make sure you are unleashing all of your productive potential. We will cover managing time, wasting time, personal time study, planning and tools, the Eisenhower Matrix, meetings, and email.

Confidence with Conflict (Afternoon)

Conflict is all around us – at work and at home. It is inevitable because no two people are exactly alike. Conflict can be destructive or constructive, invigorating or draining. To manage conflict more effectively and create a quality environment, people have to be willing to understand why conflict occurs and demonstrate a variety of strategies for dealing with different people.

Safety:

Fundamentals of Safety Certificate Series

This fall we will be introducing a new safety management series that we are offering in conjunction with the Iowa Illinois Safety Council. This series is designed for individuals who are responsible for managing or implementing safety programs at their place of employment. Because of the nature of how safety programs are structured, we recognize some employers may have many individuals involved in this process. For this reason, companies may purchase tickets for the safety series and then send whoever they would like to each of the individual sessions. If one person does complete all of the sessions, they will receive a certificate of completion for the program.

Day 1 – Introduction to OSHA and OSHA Required Recordkeeping

In this course participants will receive a basic overview of what OSHA’s history, what OSHA does and what companies fall under OSHA’s jurisdiction. We will also review companies’ responsibilities when it comes to OSHA safety requirements and also discuss what can happen if you are found not to be in compliance. Participants will also learn what types of incidents have required reporting and see examples of the forms that must be used and how and when to submit them.

Day 2 – Hazard Identification

Hazard identification is key to developing an effective safety program. In this course participants will learn about common hazards in the workplace and the appropriate way to identify them and mitigate risk. At least a portion of this course will be held offsite at a local facility where examples can be shown. (Specific location to be announced at the start of class.)

Day 3 – Job Safety Analysis

Take hazard mitigation a step further by learning how to perform a job safety analysis. OSHA describes this process as “a technique that focuses on job tasks as a way to identify hazards before they occur. It focuses on the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools, and the work environment.” You will learn how to develop and manage a JSA program in your workplace. You will also learn how to enlist participation from frontline employees, supervisors and upper management.

Day 4 – Develop a Comprehensive Training Plan

Keeping workers up-to-date on safety training is a never-ending task and one that can seem overwhelming if a structured plan is not in place. Learn what a comprehensive training plan that meets all federal and state requirements looks like, including what are the must have annual components, and what requirements are more industry or facility specific.  Finally find out what resources are out there that can help you develop and keep your plan up-to-date.

Day 5 – Incident Investigation

If an incident does occur find out how to run an effective investigation. Incidents include near misses as well as incidents where someone or something is harmed. This course dives into the analysis of the incident to determine exactly what happened, including any root causes that may have been a contributing factor, and discuss the human relations issues that may happen after an incident has occurred. The goal of the course is to be able to use this information to prevent future accidents.

Day 6 – Introduction to Change Management

Introducing new procedures can be challenging, particularly if a more comprehensive training program represents a culture shift for your organization. Learn tips and tricks for rolling out new processes so that people are more likely to be accepting of the changes.
