This course is designed to prepare individuals to safely administer non-parenteral medications in a fifteen bed or less residential facility, child care facility, or a supervised living apartment.  Emphasis is placed on the safe administration of medications from a prescription bottle and observation of obvious medication reactions.  Prerequisites:  None

Medication Aid

This 58 hour course consists of 48 classroom hours (six 8 hour days) and a minimum of 10 clinical hours. The purpose of this course is to prepare individuals to safely administer non-parenteral medications in agencies/facilities licensed by DIA. The emphasis is on safe administration and students are provided with classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences to assist in achieving the course competencies. 

Clinical must be completed at the student’s place of employment where the student must be supervised by an RN there assigned to directly supervise actual medication administration to satisfy the clinical requirements.

Dental Expanded Functions

Indian Hills Community College will again offer its on-line Dental Expanded Functions Courses for registered dental assistants or licensed dental hygienists. Course work is done on-line at your leisure and then clinical skills are completed and checked off at your place of employment.

To be eligible for expanded functions training, a registered dental assistant must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  1. Be a graduate of an ADA-accredited dental assistant program; or
  2. Be currently certified by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB); or
  3. Have at least one year of clinical practice as a registered dental assistant; or
  4. Have at least one year of clinical practice as a dental assistant in a state that does not require registration.

Dental Final Impressions - 21/YR*HEA*2106*600  This instructional unit provides the participant with basic knowledge, principles and preparation to reproduce soft and hard oral tissues for a final impression.  Cost: $50

Provisional Restorations - 21/YR*HEA*2107*600  This instructional unit provides the participant with basic knowledge, principles and preparation to fabricate and remove provisional restorations.

Removal of Dental Adhesives - 21/YR*HEA*2112*600  This instructional unit provides the participant with basic knowledge of materials, procedures, and techniques necessary in performing the removal of adhesives. Cost: $20

Placement of Class 1 Temp Filling - 21/YR*HEA*2113*600  This instructional unit provides the participant with basic knowledge of materials, procedures, and techniques necessary in performing the placement of Class 1 temporary filling materials. Cost: $30

Phlebotomy

These non-credit short term classes provide complete training in best practices of phlebotomy and other specimen collections, and includes actual hands-on competencies and practice. The program includes a hybrid portion (Principles of Phlebotomy HEA*5000) with on-line coursework and a lab meeting once per week. Also included is a clinical portion (Phlebotomy Clinical HEA*5005) with 120 hours of internship/clinical practicum at area hospitals, as is required for professional certification. Completion of this program enables graduates to sit for the Board of Certification Exam administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. These classes are excellent for persons interested in acquiring these skills as well as other healthcare professionals wanting to develop/authenticate these skills and receive an additional certification.

The graduate of this training will be able to work in clinics, hospital labs, Doctors’ offices, etc.  This is also an excellent opportunity for other health care professionals to gain phlebotomy skills and potentially an additional certification in order to enhance their current practice.

Computed Tomography (CT) Certificate Program

Prerequisites

Participants must be a registered radiologic technologist or a graduate from an accredited program preparing to take their board exam.

This certificate provides a core program of computed tomography courses for registered radiologic technologists that builds on previous educational experiences and affords the student the opportunity to acquire attitudes, knowledge and skills necessary to perform in the role of a CT technologist.  This program consists of a core of four on-line didactic courses.  In addition to the didactic courses, students must also complete specified numbers of skills in a clinical setting. Students who are not currently employed need to contact IHCC about options to complete clinical.

Intro to Mammography

This program introduces the modality of mammography and describes the roles and responsibilities of a mammographer. Radiographic imaging of the breast will be discussed. Topics of study include anatomy of the breast, recommended guidelines for mammography, the mammographic equipment utilized and quality control measures conducted to assure quality examinations.

Intro to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

This program is designed to provide the student with an introduction to the field of magnetic resonance imaging. It will include an overview of the history and development of MRI. This course introduces the student to the scientific knowledge, technical skills, and communication techniques, as specified by OBRA, to function as an accountable member of the health care team. Theory, laboratory practice, and clinical experience will be incorporated to prepare the student to address the patient’s biopsychosocial and spiritual needs.

Prerequisites: 

  1. Required State Criminal and Abuse Background Check. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals requires a State check and verification be done through Iowa Department of Human Services. You will be given the Criminal background check form to fill out at the MANDATORY ORIENTATION. If you believe there is a reason your background check will be flagged by the state, you will need to click on the State Background Check button below to download the Criminal background check form prior to orientation. You will need to fill it out, sign it and return it to us immediately. You will not be allowed to attend clinical until your background checks has been cleared by the state which can take a couple of weeks. If the State Background check and verification is more than 30 days old, it is not valid for the CNA program and will need to be repeated at the $20.00 fee.
  2. Physical Examination. Physical with immunization and a two-step TB testing (PPD). Click on the Physical Examination Form button below to download the physical form. You are required to turn in the completed physical to your instructor at the MANDATORY ORIENTATION. All documentation must be transferred onto the physical form, please do not attach documentation to it. The form must be signed by a practitioner (ARNP, PA , MD, DO) after the form is completely filled out and your physical is complete. Students without completed forms will not be allowed to start the CNA class.

Registration Deadline and Mandatory Orientation

All nurse aide classes will have a registration deadline of 12:00pm on the Monday preceding the start date of class. All students are required to attend a mandatory orientation on the Tuesday preceding the first day of class at 2:00pm in the Rosenman Center. This orientation will last approximately 2 hours. If pre-registered students do not attend this mandatory orientation, they will be removed from the class roster and their spot may be filled with another student.

 In order to qualify for a refund, you must cancel your registration 3 business days before the start of your class. If you have not prepaid for the class, charges will still be assessed to your account if you do not show up for the class or cancel within the required time frame. CNA Registry Testing – Examination fee $95.00

IHCC offers the CNA Skills Registry Examinations on certain Fridays throughout the year. No walk-ins will be allowed for the exam. Students who fail to cancel or do not show will forfeit their testing fee. The skills examinations will be completed on the IHCC Ottumwa Campus at the Rosenman Center, room 46. Students must wear plain scrubs, no prints, and must show a photo ID.

IHCC offers the CNA Written Registry Examinations through our Testing Center at the Trustee Hall. The written examinations are computerized and will be administered on an individual basis. Candidates must show a photo ID to test.

Nurse Aide (CNA) Refresher 

The purpose of this course is to provide content and skill review for individuals who have successfully completed a 75 hour nurse aide course in the past. A copy of your previous course certificate will be required. Review of content will consist of both classroom knowledge and skills review to assist with preparation for State Skills Competency testing for the Nurse Aide Registry. This course is to help facilitate re-entry into the long term work force to individuals who are no longer on the registry or never completed registry testing. Students will only have 1/2 hour for lunch and may want to bring a lunch to class.

LPN IV Expanded Therapy

Background: The Iowa Board of Nursing rules for nursing practice of the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse are found in 655 IAC Chapter 6.  Chapter 6 identifies the scope of practice of the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse.  Effective November 11, 1998, a licensed practical nurse who has completed a board-approved intravenous therapy course offered by a board-approved provider of continuing education will be permitted to perform procedures related to an expanded scope of administration of intravenous therapy in a licensed hospital, a licensed skilled nursing facility and a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit.

Course Description:  This course is designed to prepare the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy, using a peripheral intravenous catheter, a midline catheter and a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line), in a licensed hospital, a licensed skilled nursing facility and a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit as identified in 655 IAC Chapter 6.  Major emphasis is placed on the specialized skills needed to provide intravenous therapy related to the expanded scope of the licensed practical nurse for clients who are age 12 or older and for clients who weigh 80 pounds or more. 

  • Current unrestricted Iowa license to practice as a licensed practical nurse
  • Documentation of 1040 hours of practice as a licensed practical nurse
  • Employment in a licensed hospital, a licensed skilled nursing facility or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit whose policies allow the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy.
