Legacy Cancer Conference

The purpose of this conference is to give healthcare providers knowledge and tools needed to enhance the care they provide to patients with cancer.

Sessions:

The State of Immunotherapy in 2020- Dr. Josh Lukenbill

Oncology has been revolutionized by ‘immunotherapy’ or harnessing the power of the immune system to attack cancer cells. However, as with many revolutions, the rapidity of change has led to discovery of new challenges to parallel its successes. We will dive into the premise of these immunotherapy mechanisms, its clinical utility and potential toxicities. We also review tactics that we, a medical community, are formulating to overcome these new challenges in order to fully unlock the promise of immunotherapy.

Palliative Care in the Era of Hard to Die - Dr. Charles Goldman

New technologies--LVAD's for severe heart failure, non-invasive ventilation for those with COPD, and immunotherapy for various advanced cancers---are altering the natural history of disease in the chronically ill patient. While extending survival in cancer patients would seem to be an inherently good thing, the situation is not always that clear-cut. Living longer may mean suffering the complications of a cancer for a longer period of time or by our changing the biology of a disease, cancer patients live to experience new complications that are even more devastating than the ones seen in the past. We will discuss how we balance living the most days with living the greatest number of quality days.
